4.9.1Introduction: The Chromatic Wedge
As we have seen throughout our study of harmony, diatonic progressions rely on the gravitational pull of the circle of fifths and the strong leading-tone resolutions inherent in the major and minor scales. However, there exists a parallel tradition of harmonic motion driven not by root movement, but by linear chromaticism. When voices move by half-step in contrary motion, they can slice through traditional functional harmony like a wedge.
The most famous of these linear patterns is the Omnibus Progression. The term “omnibus” (Latin for “for all”) suggests its comprehensive nature - in its complete, extended form, the progression’s bass line descends through an entire octave, hitting every single note of the chromatic scale. Above this descending bass, the upper voices typically ascend chromatically, creating a visual “chromatic wedge” on the staff.
While it sounds like an advanced jazz concept, the omnibus progression has deep roots in the Baroque “lament bass” and was a favourite tool of Romantic composers like Schubert and Brahms to prolong dominant tension. In popular music, the principles underlying the omnibus - contrary chromatic motion and voice exchange - can be found in everything from ragtime to Radiohead.
4.9.2The Anatomy of the Omnibus
At its core, the omnibus progression is a prolonged dominant chord achieved through voice exchange.
Let’s look at a simple example in C major, focusing on the dominant G7 chord. Instead of simply playing G7 and resolving to C, we can prolong the tension by moving the bass down chromatically while moving an upper voice up chromatically.

In this sequence, the bass descends chromatically: B → B♭ → A → A♭ → G. Against that descent, the soprano ascends by exactly mirrored half-steps: G → A♭ → A → B♭ → B. Now watch what the outer voices accomplish between the first chord and the last: they trade notes. The bass begins on B - the third of G7 - and ends on G, the root; the soprano begins on G and ends on B. The omnibus is a voice exchange composed out in chromatic slow motion: the two outer voices pass the root and third of the dominant to each other, touching every half-step along the way. And the wedge visibly opens as they go - the outer voices start a sixth apart, pass through a bare octave at the midpoint (the Dm/A chord, where the soprano's A sounds against the bass's A), and end a tenth apart.
And the inner voices? They do not move at all. D and F - the fifth and seventh of G7 - are held as common tones through every chord of the wedge: D is the fifth of G7, the third of B♭7, and the root of Dm; F is the seventh of G7, the fifth of B♭7, and the third of Dm. Two voices in maximal chromatic motion, two voices in perfect stillness - the change-versus-continuity bargain of this whole book, rendered in a single five-chord specimen. Modern theorists, such as Telesco, describe the result not as a series of functional chords but as a single dominant prolongation: the B♭7 and Dm in between are passing chords, created by the linear motion of the outer voices and stabilized by the two held common tones.
The Extended Omnibus
The true “omnibus” occurs when this pattern is chained together, modulating through multiple keys before finally resolving. Because the pattern relies on the symmetrical properties of the diminished seventh chord (which connects the dominant sevenths), it can be halted at any point to modulate to a new key.

Look closely at the seam where the first module hands off to the second - G7 | Bm/F♯ | G7/F | E7. As the bass continues its descent (G → F♯ → F → E), the ascending chromatic line is taken over by a different voice: the F that sat motionless through the entire first module now climbs - F → F♯ → G → G♯ - while B and D become the new held pair, arriving as the fifth and seventh of E7. This is the engine of the extended omnibus: at every module boundary, the moving lines and the common tones trade jobs. The wedge is a relay - each voice takes its turn carrying the chromatic line while the others hold still.
4.9.3Historical Ancestors: The Lament Bass and Romanesca
The omnibus progression did not emerge from a vacuum. It is the chromatic descendant of older, diatonic bass patterns that served as the foundation for improvisation and variation.
The Lament Bass

The Romanesca, originating in Spain, is a four-chord sequence (typically III - VII - i - V) in triple meter that provided a robust groundwork for variations. The Passamezzo antico is a similar ground-bass pattern, often in duple meter (famous examples include the traditional Greensleeves). These early repeating patterns established the concept of harmony driven by a structural bass line rather than a melody, paving the way for the complex linear bass lines of the omnibus.
4.9.4The Ragtime Progression: A Chain of Dominants
If the omnibus is a wedge of contrary chromatic motion, the Ragtime Progression is a cascade of secondary dominants.

The Chromatic Connection
Why discuss the ragtime progression alongside the omnibus? Because the ragtime progression is also driven by chromatic voice leading.
When moving from E7 to A7, the third of E7 (G#) descends by a half-step to become the seventh of A7 (G). Simultaneously, the seventh of E7 (D) remains stationary to become the fourth (or suspended third) of A7, or resolves down.
In a continuous chain of dominant sevenths, the thirds and sevenths of the chords create two distinct, descending chromatic lines. Despite this internal chromaticism, the bass line (the roots of the chords) often remains pentatonic or diatonic. The ragtime progression demonstrates how functional circle-of-fifths motion can be seamlessly married to smooth, linear chromatic voice leading.
4.9.5The Backdoor Progression: Approaching from Below
While the omnibus prolongs the dominant, and the ragtime progression chains dominants together, the Backdoor Progression offers an entirely different approach to the tonic, bypassing the dominant V chord altogether.
In jazz harmony, the standard “front door” approach to the tonic is the ii-V-I progression (e.g., Dm7

The Mechanics of the Backdoor
The bVII7 chord is borrowed from the parallel minor key (C minor). It functions as a dominant, but its voice leading is distinct from the standard V7 chord.
In C major: The V7 chord (G7: G-B-D-F) resolves to C major (C-E-G) with the leading tone B resolving up to C, and the seventh F resolving down to E. The bVII7 chord (Bb7: Bb-D-F-Ab) shares two common tones with G7 (D and F). However, the Ab and F in Bb7 act as upper leading-tones, resolving down by half-step to G and E, respectively.
This creates a “bluesy,” unexpected resolution that is a staple of jazz substitutions. It is famously used in John Coltrane’s Lazy Bird and standard tunes like My Romance, but it also appears in pop music, such as The Beatles’ In My Life and If I Fell.
The backdoor progression is a powerful example of what we have called substitutive closure - achieving the rhetorical effect of harmonic resolution without the classical leading tone. The ♭VII7 chord arrives at the tonic through descending half-step voice leading rather than ascending leading-tone pull, offering a softer, more ambiguous sense of homecoming. It is, in a sense, the Plagal Paradigm’s jazzy cousin - another road to Ithaca that bypasses the dominant entirely.
4.9.6The Montgomery-Ward Bridge
To round out our exploration of advanced progressions, we must look at the Montgomery-Ward Bridge. This is a standard chord progression commonly employed as the ‘B section’ (or bridge) in jazz standards, providing harmonic contrast to the ‘A section’.
In its fundamental form, it is a sequence of dominant seventh chords: | I7 | IV7 | ii7 | V7 |
However, jazz musicians rarely play it this simply. A frequent alteration involves substituting the dominant chords with their corresponding ii-V progressions.

The progressions discussed in this chapter - the Omnibus, the Ragtime chain, the Backdoor, and the Montgomery-Ward bridge - reveal a crucial truth about advanced harmony: chords do not always function as independent vertical pillars.
In advanced harmonic practices, chords are often the result of linear, horizontal motion. Whether it’s the chromatic wedge of the omnibus, the descending guide tones of the ragtime progression, or the upper leading-tones of the backdoor cadence, voice leading is the engine that drives the harmony forward. Understanding these progressions requires shifting our perspective from the vertical stack of notes to the horizontal lines that weave them together.
