1.4.1Tones, Semitones, and the Chromatic Scale

Look at a piano keyboard. Really look at it - the pattern of white and black keys, repeating every twelve notes, stretching from the growl of the bass to the shimmer of the upper register. It is one of the most elegant designs in the history of human technology, and it encodes a decision that shapes an enormous share of the Western music heard today.

The decision is this: the octave - the distance from any note to the next note with the same name - is divided into twelve equal steps. Not thirteen, not ten, and not the flexible shruti and intonational practices of Indian classical music or the pitch inflections and interval systems of Arabic maqam. Twelve. This system, called twelve-tone equal temperament, is a compromise. It is not acoustically perfect - no equally spaced division of the octave can be, because the mathematics of pure intervals and equal division do not align exactly. But it is extraordinarily versatile, and it is the dominant modern tuning framework for Western fixed-pitch instruments, popular and classical alike.

The smallest distance between any two adjacent keys on the piano - whether white to black, black to white, or white to white where no black key intervenes (E to F, B to C) - is called a semitone, or a half step. This is the atom of Western pitch. You cannot go smaller without leaving the system.

Two semitones make a tone, or a whole step. C to D is a whole step - the black key C♯ sits between them like a stepping stone you skipped. D to E is a whole step. E to F is a half step - there is no black key between them. This uneven spacing of the keyboard is not an accident. It is the visible trace of the scales buried inside it, the topography of a landscape we are about to explore.

If you play every single key in order - every white, every black, nothing skipped - you are playing the chromatic scale. All twelve pitches, marching by half steps from any starting note to the same note an octave higher. The word “chromatic” comes from the Greek chroma, meaning colour. The chromatic scale is the full palette - every colour available. But a painting made with every colour simultaneously is not a painting. It is mud. Music works the same way. The power comes from choosing - from selecting a subset of those twelve pitches and letting the ones you leave out create the spaces, the tensions, the identities that make a scale feel like something.

That subset is called a scale - from the Italian scala, a ladder. And every ladder has a different shape.


1.4.2The Major Scale

The most foundational ladder in Western music is the major scale. You know its sound already, even if you do not know its name. Sing “Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do” - that is a major scale. It sounds bright, stable, confident. It sounds like home.

The major scale is built from a specific recipe of whole steps and half steps:

Start on C and follow the recipe: C – D – E – F – G – A – B – C. All white keys. No sharps, no flats. This is why C major is the first scale every piano student learns - not because it is musically special, but because it is visually simple. The recipe is the same regardless of which note you begin on. Start on G and you get one sharp. Start on E♭ and you get three flats. The landscape changes, but the shape of the ladder does not.

Two things about this recipe deserve your attention. First, notice where the half steps fall: between the third and fourth notes, and between the seventh and first. These are the narrow rungs, the places where the ladder pinches, and they give the major scale its distinctive character. Second - and this will matter enormously later - notice the seventh note. In C major, that is B. It sits one tiny half step below the home note. One half step. So close that you can feel the gravitational pull, the yearning to move upward, to resolve. That seventh note is called the leading tone, and its desire to rise is one of the most powerful forces in tonal music. It is the musical equivalent of leaning forward on the edge of your chair. Something is about to happen. Something is about to land.

Remember that feeling. It will have a name, and a theory, and an argument built around it, by the time we reach Unit II.

This scale pattern is also known by its modal name: the Ionian mode. We will meet the other modes later. For now, just know that when someone says “Ionian,” they mean the major scale - the bright one, the one that sounds like arriving.


1.4.3The Natural Minor Scale

If the major scale is noon, the natural minor scale is twilight. Not darkness - twilight. A different quality of light. The same twelve pitches are available; the ladder simply has a different shape.

This simple shift changes the relationships among the scale degrees and transforms the expressive palette. For listeners steeped in Western music, major is often associated with happiness and minor with sadness, though that mapping is learned, culturally variable, and shaped alongside tempo, register, articulation, and timbre.

The natural minor scale is also called the Aeolian mode. And there is a crucial difference at the top of its ladder: the seventh note (G, in A minor) sits a whole step below the home note, not a half step. That gravitational pull we felt in the major scale - the leading tone’s urgent desire to resolve upward - is weaker here. The seventh note in natural minor does not lean. It hovers. The door to home is open, but nobody is pushing you through it.

This changes everything about how minor-key music creates resolution, and it explains why composers have spent centuries tinkering with the top of the minor scale.


1.4.4Harmonic Minor and Melodic Minor

In minor-key tonal practice, scale degrees 6 and 7 are variable. Composers often raise 7 when they want a strong leading-tone pull, choosing the forms of 6 and 7 according to harmony, melodic contour, and voice leading.

The harmonic minor scale raises 7 by a semitone. In A minor, G becomes G♯, creating a leading tone and an augmented second - three semitones - between F and G♯. Some common-practice melodies smooth that span by also raising 6; augmented seconds also belong naturally to several West Asian and North African modal traditions, so “awkward” is a stylistic judgment, not a universal one.

The conventional classroom form of melodic minor raises scale degrees 6 and 7 ascending and restores the natural-minor forms descending. In actual minor-key music, composers vary 6 and 7 according to harmony, melodic direction, and voice leading.

This ascending/descending distinction matters in classical practice. In popular music, the situation is more relaxed. Modern pop, rock, and R&B frequently use the natural minor scale exactly as it is, embracing its lack of a strong leading tone as a feature, not a flaw. That hovering, unresolved quality - the door open but nobody pushing - is part of the sound. Minor-key pop songs often do not want the insistent pull of a leading tone. They want the ambiguity. They want the twilight to linger.

We will see, when we reach harmony, that this choice has profound consequences for the chords built on these scales and the progressions that emerge from them.


1.4.5Major and Minor Pentatonic

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is leave notes out.

Pentatonic collections are ancient and extraordinarily widespread, appearing in many distinct traditions across East Asia, West Africa, Scotland, the Andes, and Indigenous North America.

The major pentatonic takes the major scale and removes the two notes that contain half steps - the fourth and the seventh. In C: C – D – E – G – A. Because it contains no semitone neighbours, the scale is unusually forgiving. Space the five notes well and you are more likely to hear a choir than a car alarm; crush them into the wrong register and even a pentatonic cluster can bite.

The minor pentatonic does the same extraction from the natural minor scale, removing the second and sixth: A – C – D – E – G. This is the sound of the blues, the sound of rock guitar, the backbone of an enormous swath of popular music from Robert Johnson to Jack White. It sounds tough, raw, and emotionally direct. Every rock guitar solo you have ever air-guitared was almost certainly built on this scale.

What makes pentatonic scales so versatile is precisely what they lack: the half steps. By removing the two tightest intervals - the places where adjacent notes rub against each other - the pentatonic scale eliminates the strongest sources of tension. What remains is a forgiving framework that works over many compatible chords with fewer semitone collisions - not a guarantee against every clash.


1.4.6The Blues Scale

Take the minor pentatonic. Add one note. Change everything.

The blues scale is the minor pentatonic with a chromatic addition between scale degrees 4 and 5. In A: A–C–D–D♯/E♭–E–G. In this six-note textbook scale, ♯4/♭5 is a notated stand-in for one blue-note region. Blues practice also bends and shades the third, fifth, and seventh: blue notes are flexible pitch zones, not fixed piano keys, and their friction depends on harmony and performance.

Blue-note inflection is not a mistake. Singers and instrumentalists bend into, through, and around these pitch regions; standard notation can indicate the gesture but cannot fully contain it. The page offers a nearest pitch. The performance says something more complicated.

The blues scale and its blue note are foundational to rock and roll, R&B, gospel, soul, jazz, and virtually every genre that descends from the African-American musical tradition. Its influence is so pervasive that most listeners do not hear it as dissonant anymore - they hear it as expressive, as real, as the sound of music that means something. It is, in many ways, the sound that separates popular music from classical music: the willingness to let a note be rough, to let it ache, to let it say what polished consonance cannot.
