1.8.1Power Chords

Turn on a rock radio station. Wait thirty seconds. What you are almost certainly hearing, underneath the vocals and the drums and whatever else is happening, is a guitar playing power chords.

The power chord is the most ubiquitous sound in rock music. It is the foundation of punk. It is the engine of metal. It is the sound of a Marshall amplifier turned up past the point of reason, and yet - here is the delightful irony - it is technically not a chord at all.

A chord, by the traditional definition, requires at least three different pitches. A power chord has only two: the root and the perfect fifth above it. That is all. Two notes. One interval. The third - the note that would tell you whether you are hearing something major (bright) or minor (dark) - is simply absent. The power chord refuses to declare itself. It occupies a harmonic no-man’s-land, neither happy nor sad, neither major nor minor, defined entirely by the raw, open resonance of the perfect fifth.

In chord symbols, a power chord is written with the number 5: C5, G5, E5. On the guitar, the shape is simple - two or three frets, two or three strings, the same fingering sliding up and down the neck. It is the first “chord” many rock guitarists learn, often before they learn what a chord actually is, and there is something fitting about that. The power chord is primal. It does not need theory to justify itself. It sounds like what it is: power.

Often the root is doubled an octave higher, making the voicing root–fifth–octave. Three strings, two pitch classes, one colossal sound. And that doubling is important, because it makes the power chord bigger without making it more complex. The extra octave thickens the texture without adding any new information. It is emphasis, not elaboration. Volume without clutter.

1.8.2Why Power Chords Work: Distortion and Physics

The power chord’s dominance in rock music is not an aesthetic accident. It is a consequence of physics.

When an electric guitar signal passes through a distortion circuit - whether it is a tube amplifier driven into saturation or a digital overdrive pedal - the nonlinear circuit reshapes or clips the waveform, adding harmonics; when multiple pitches enter together, it also generates intermodulation products from their interaction.

After the unison and octave, the perfect fifth has one of the simplest ideal frequency ratios - 3:2 in just intonation, closely approximated by equal temperament. With a just 3:2 dyad, many products generated by nonlinearity align with a shared harmonic series. An equal-tempered fifth is not exact, so not every product aligns perfectly, but the relationship often produces less beating and spectral crowding than a close, third-rich voicing.

Now try the same thing with a major or minor triad. In just intonation, a major third can be tuned 5:4 and a minor third 6:5; equal-tempered guitar thirds only approximate those ratios. Add the third to a distorted power chord and the nonlinear circuit generates harmonics and intermodulation products from a denser set of inputs. Depending on tuning, voicing, register, and gain, those added frequencies can beat and crowd one another, turning three clean notes into a muddy snarl through a cranked Marshall. The amplifier is not failing to process the mathematics. It is faithfully reshaping a more complex spectrum - and sometimes that complexity is exactly the sound a player wants.

The power chord solves the problem by removing the problem. No played third, and usually less intermodulation clutter than a close-position triad - not none. Just root and fifth, fused by distortion into a single, monolithic sound - a sound that is less a harmony than a timbre. A guitarist ripping through a sequence of power chords is not thinking about voice leading or chord quality. They are moving a block of sound - a unified texture, a sonic fist - up and down the fretboard. Each position produces a different pitch but the same character. The power chord does not ask you to listen analytically. It asks you to feel.


1.8.3Rock and Metal Context

The power chord has a history, and it reads like a timeline of popular music’s loudest moments.

You can hear its ancestors in the open-fifth drones of blues guitar. You can hear it crystallize in the mid-1960s - the Kinks’ You Really Got Me (1964), where Dave Davies slashed his speaker cone with a razor blade and played two-note chords through the resulting distortion, producing a sound that nobody had heard before and everybody would imitate for the next sixty years. You can hear it darken in Black Sabbath’s Iron Man (1970), where Tony Iommi moved power chords in slow, heavy chromatic steps, inventing the sonic vocabulary of heavy metal in a single riff. You can hear it speed up in the Ramones, simplify in the Sex Pistols, detonate in Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit (1991), where four power chords - F5, B♭5, A♭5, D♭5 - launched an entire cultural movement.

Green Day built a career on power chords. So did AC/DC, the White Stripes, Blink-182, and Foo Fighters. The sound crosses decades and subgenres because the power chord is infinitely adaptable. In a bright pop-punk song, it sounds exuberant. In a doom metal dirge, it sounds apocalyptic. The same two notes, the same interval, but the tempo, the timbre, the rhythmic context, and the surrounding musical information transform the character entirely.

This is one of the most important lessons the power chord teaches: harmonic ambiguity is not a weakness. It is a resource. Because the power chord contains no third, the listener’s brain fills in the harmonic context from other cues - the melody above, the key the song is in, the emotional temperature of the performance. The chord does not tell you what to feel. It lets you feel. And that openness, that refusal to resolve the major/minor question, is part of why it has endured as the defining sound of an entire tradition.
