3.3.1Building Beyond the Seventh
A cathedral has a foundation, walls, a roof. That is a building. But the great cathedrals of Europe did not stop at the roof. They added spires - structures that served no load-bearing function whatsoever, that added nothing to the building’s ability to keep out rain, but that transformed a shelter into a statement. The spire says: we are reaching for something beyond the merely functional.
Extended chords are the spires of harmony. The triad is the foundation. The seventh is the roof - still structural, still load-bearing. But the ninth, the eleventh, the thirteenth? They are reaching upward into the sky, adding colour, atmosphere, and aspiration to a harmonic structure that was already complete without them.
The dominant seventh was our first taste of extension back in Chapter 2.7, where the blues IV7 chord demonstrated that a seventh could be more than a voice-leading event - it could be a permanent resident, a colour that defines an entire style. In Chapter 3.1, we saw how secondary dominants deploy the dominant seventh’s tension across the entire key. Now we push the stack further. By continuing to stack thirds above the root, we can create extended chords: ninths, elevenths, and thirteenths.
Because there are only seven notes in a diatonic scale, stacking thirds eventually brings us back to the notes we skipped.
- A ninth is a compound second (an octave plus a second).
- An eleventh is a compound fourth (an octave plus a fourth).
- A thirteenth is a compound sixth (an octave plus a sixth).
If we stack another third on top of a thirteenth, we arrive at the fifteenth - which is simply a double octave of the root. Therefore, the thirteenth is the highest possible extension.
While jazz relies heavily on these extended sonorities to create dense, complex harmonic landscapes, popular music uses them more sparingly. In pop, rock, and R&B, extensions are usually employed for colour rather than for function. They add richness, tension, or a specific atmospheric quality to a chord without necessarily changing its structural role in the progression.
Guided Practice: On a piano, play a C dominant seventh chord (C, E, G, B♭). Now add the D above the B♭. You have just played a C9 chord. Listen to how the D adds a layer of brightness to the dominant sound without changing its fundamental urge to resolve to F.
3.3.2Chords of Addition vs. Chords of Extension
Before diving into the extensions themselves, it is crucial to distinguish between a chord of extension and a chord of addition (such as an add9 or add6 chord). The difference is primarily one of voicing and the presence (or absence) of the seventh.
A true extended chord (like a C9 or C13) implies the presence of the seventh. The seventh is the structural floor that supports the upper extensions.
An added chord (like a Cadd9 or Cadd2) adds a colour note to a simple triad without including the seventh.
For example, a C9 chord contains C, E, G, B♭, and D. A Cadd9 chord contains only C, E, G, and D.
Added chords are incredibly common in rock and pop because they provide the shimmering colour of an extension without the functional baggage (and potential clash) of the seventh. Many pop and rock progressions employ add9 voicings for their open, airy quality; artists like Joni Mitchell and contemporary pop producers frequently reach for these voicings to float a progression above a clear harmonic foundation.

3.3.3Ninths and Thirteenths
The most common extensions in popular music are the ninth and the thirteenth.
Ninth Chords Ninths can be effectively added to major, minor, or dominant chords. In functional harmony, a ninth (like a seventh) generally wants to fall by step to its note of resolution.
- A diatonic major ninth (M9) blends smoothly into the key and is very common in funk, soul, and R&B.
- A chromatically altered flat-ninth (♭9) creates a much sharper, more urgent dissonance. It is often used on dominant chords (V♭9) to create a stronger pull back to the tonic, especially a minor tonic.
Example: The dominant ninth (V9) is a staple of funk and blues. James Brown’s “I Got You (I Feel Good)” relies heavily on the sharp, percussive sound of dominant ninth chords. In the neo-soul space, D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” uses complex, layered ninth chords to create a thick, jazz-inflected harmonic bed.
Thirteenth Chords Thirteenth chords (which usually omit the eleventh and sometimes the ninth) provide a very wide, open sound. Like ninths, diatonic thirteenths (major 13ths) blend well and gently pull downward, while flat-thirteenths (♭13) create a sharp chromatic dissonance that demands resolution.
It is worth noting that a V♭13 chord is enharmonically equivalent to a V7♯5 chord (an altered dominant). The distinction usually lies in the voice leading: a ♭13 tends to resolve downward, while a ♯5 tends to resolve upward to the major third of the tonic chord. The close kinship between the V♭13 and V7♯5 will take on new significance in Chapter 4.2 (Altered Dominants), where we will systematically explore every chromatic alteration available to the dominant chord. And the tritone hidden inside every dominant seventh - the interval that makes V7 want to resolve - will become the engine of tritone substitution in Chapter 4.3.
In contemporary R&B, artists like Erykah Badu and Anderson .Paak treat extended chords not as jazz borrowings but as their native harmonic language. Badu’s “On & On” floats over major ninth and thirteenth voicings that blur the line between jazz and neo-soul. In a different register entirely, Steely Dan’s Peg showcases the major add9 as a pop-production tool: bright, sparkling, and deceptively simple on the surface while harmonically sophisticated underneath.

A man at the next table leaned over and said, ‘She’s not playing songs. She’s painting rooms.’ I have never forgotten that.”
3.3.4The Eleventh Chord Problem
Eleventh chords are a special category and must be handled with care.
In a major or dominant chord, a perfect eleventh creates a harsh dissonance - a minor ninth interval - against the major third of the chord. For example, in a C11 chord, the E (the major third) and the F (the perfect eleventh) clash violently. Furthermore, the F is the very note that the E wants to resolve to, meaning the eleventh prematurely gives away the resolution, creating a functional “mess.”
Because of this, true major or dominant eleventh chords are rare. When composers want the sound of an eleventh over a major root, they typically use one of two solutions: 1. Omit the third: This creates a 7sus4 chord, which we explored in Unit I. 2. Raise the eleventh: A sharp-eleventh (♯11) eliminates the clash with the major third. The ♯11 chord (derived from the Lydian mode) is a beautiful, floating sonority used purely for colour.
However, on a minor seventh chord, the perfect eleventh does not clash with the minor third. Therefore, minor eleventh chords (m11) are perfectly stable and are frequently used to colour minor progressions.
Example: The opening chord of The Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night” is famously complex, featuring a heavily voiced suspension with elements that approach the sonority of an m11 - a famous example of how studio arrangement can layer multiple extensions into a single statement.
3.3.5The “Avoid Note” Principle and Voice Leading
The problem with the eleventh chord illustrates a broader concept borrowed from jazz theory: the avoid note principle.
Generally, any extension that creates a minor ninth interval above a structural chord tone (the root, third, or fifth) will sound unpleasantly dissonant and should be avoided or altered.
- A perfect eleventh over a major third creates a minor ninth (avoid).
- A minor thirteenth (♭13) over a perfect fifth creates a minor ninth (usually, the fifth is omitted to accommodate the ♭13).
When voicing extended chords on a piano or guitar, composers rarely play every single note in the stack. To prevent the chord from sounding muddy, certain notes are omitted. The root and the fifth are the most commonly dropped notes, as the bass player usually handles the root, and the perfect fifth provides little colour. The third, seventh, and the extensions are kept to define the chord’s quality and colour.

“When voicing extended chords, think like an architect, not a collector. You do not need every note - you need the right notes. The third tells you major or minor. The seventh tells you the chord’s function. The extension tells you its colour. Root and fifth? The bass player has those covered. Get out of their way.”
The way extensions multiply a chord’s possible interpretations points toward a deeper phenomenon. A C13 chord contains so many notes that it could plausibly be heard as several different chords depending on which tones the ear prioritizes. This functional multiplicity - a single chord existing in several gravitational fields at once - will become a central concern in Unit IV, where we will encounter the concept of the Quantum Function: the idea that in jazz and modern pop, chords increasingly exist in probabilistic rather than deterministic functional states (see Chapters 4.2 and 4.6).
3.3.6The Sharp-Nine (The Hendrix Chord)
There is one specific extended chord that defies the rules of classical voice leading but has become a foundational pillar of rock and blues: the dominant seventh sharp-nine chord (7♯9).
This chord consists of a dominant seventh shell (root, major third, perfect fifth, minor seventh) with an augmented ninth (♯9) added on top. Enharmonically, the ♯9 is the same note as the minor third. Therefore, this chord essentially contains both the major third and the minor third simultaneously.
This creates an incredibly stark, biting dissonance that perfectly captures the tension of the blues scale. The 7♯9 chord is a vivid example of what we might call the blues exception to classical voice-leading law. In Chapter 2.7, we saw how the blues scale’s ♭3 coexists with the major harmony’s natural 3. The Hendrix Chord makes that coexistence literal - both thirds sounding simultaneously. This is not a mistake to be corrected; it is the sound of two musical traditions sharing the same cup. It is famously known as the “Hendrix Chord” - a title Jimi Hendrix earned not by inventing the voicing (jazz musicians had been using it for decades) but by plugging it into a Marshall stack and setting the twentieth century on fire. He used it as the primary rhythmic engine for Purple Haze, and in doing so, he gave an entire generation permission to treat dissonance not as a problem to be resolved but as a place to live.
Example: While Hendrix popularized it in rock, the 7♯9 chord is also a staple of hard bop and funk. It is not used functionally to resolve to a tonic; rather, it is used as a static, groove-based sonority that provides its own internal tension.
