2.5.1Introduction: What is a Schema?
Music, in many ways, is a delicate negotiation between the mathematical and the magical. One of the most fascinating intersections of these two realms is the study of chord schemata - a concept that brings recognizable order to the sprawling universe of harmony.
But what exactly is a schema? At its core, a chord schema (plural: schemata) is a predefined harmonic progression, a culturally ingrained sequence of chords that follows a predictable and satisfying pattern. If a random assortment of chords is a scramble of letters, a schema is a well-worn idiom. The term itself is derived from the Greek schēma, meaning "form" or "shape," which is delightfully apt: these progressions provide the harmonic architecture for a piece of music.1
Without some form of recognizable pattern, music can feel disjointed or chaotic. As we established in Chapter 2.3 (Harmony), harmony is not a static backdrop but an active participant in storytelling. Schemata create a framework upon which melody, rhythm, and texture can be draped. By deploying an established schema, a composer or songwriter guides the listener's ear through a harmonic journey, setting up expectations and then either deliciously fulfilling or wickedly subverting them. In popular music, schemata are the invisible scaffolding holding up the chorus you can't get out of your head.
Let's explore the most pervasive harmonic templates in the pop music pantheon.
2.5.2Standard Changes and the Doo-Wop Progression
If the 1950s had a harmonic fingerprint, it was the Doo-Wop Progression: I–vi–IV–V.
Emerging from the vocal-based rhythm and blues that dominated the mid-century American music scene, this progression is synonymous with malt shops, jukeboxes, and pompadours. It is remarkably effective due to its cyclic nature; the dominant V chord yearns to resolve back to the tonic I, allowing the progression to loop seamlessly into eternity (a concept of continuous motion we explored in Chapter 2.3's discussion of loops and vamps).
You can hear this unapologetically cheerful sequence in classics like Stay by Maurice Williams (1960), Please Mr. Postman by The Marvelettes (1961), and Wonderful World by Sam Cooke (1960). But its utility didn't die with the Eisenhower administration. The Police weaponized it with a brooding guitar ostinato in Every Breath You Take (1983), and R. Kelly adapted it with gospel-infused secondary dominants in I Believe I Can Fly (1996).
A close cousin of the Doo-Wop progression is what this book calls the Standard Changes - the I–vi–ii–V turnaround heard in the A sections of Rhythm Changes, the 32-bar AABA framework derived from Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm." The turnaround swaps IV for ii, adding a smooth ii–V7 approach to the dominant. Rhythm Changes includes the complete AABA form, not merely this four-chord cell.
2.5.3The Plagal Doo-Wop
In recent years, a variation of the Doo-Wop progression has grown immensely in popularity: the Plagal Doo-Wop. This progression is essentially the classic Doo-Wop sequence minus the V chord, typically replacing it by returning to the tonic (I) or extending the IV chord.
The resulting sequence, I–vi–IV–I (or simply looping I–vi–IV), creates a very tonic-friendly, open-ended loop that avoids the strong cadential pull of the dominant chord. It fits perfectly within the Plagal Paradigm we explored in Chapter 2.4 - harmonic motion driven more by subdominant (IV) relationships than dominant (V) resolutions.
This progression can be heard driving modern hits like Kenny Chesney's Don't It (2014), Bruno Mars's Just the Way You Are (2010), and Ed Sheeran's Drunk (2011). It provides a sense of continuous, rolling motion without the finality of a traditional perfect cadence.
2.5.4The Four Chords of Pop
If you've listened to the radio at any point since 1990, you have been thoroughly marinated in the Four Chords of Pop: I–V–vi–IV.
There is just something chemically irresistible about this sequence. It transcends the boundaries of genre, tempo, and mood. The Australian comedy group The Axis of Awesome famously demonstrated its ubiquity by performing a medley of dozens of hit songs over this exact progression, and the demonstration went viral because the point was impossible to dispute.
In a major key, the progression moves from the stable tonic (I), to the tense dominant (V), dips into the relative minor (vi), and opens up to the subdominant (IV) before looping back home. This creates a perpetually rolling harmonic motion. You can hear it driving the verses of The Beatles' Let It Be (1970), the anthemic chorus of Journey's Don't Stop Believin' (1981), and the tear-jerking arc of Adele's Someone Like You (2011).
Interestingly, if we start the exact same loop on the minor chord - vi–IV–I–V (or i–VI–III–VII in minor key terms) - the emotional tenor shifts dramatically. This minor-first rotation underpins angsty anthems like Save Tonight by Eagle-Eye Cherry (1997), Building a Mystery by Sarah McLachlan (1997), and Numb by Linkin Park (2003).
2.5.5The Puff Opening
The Puff Progression, named for its prominent use in Peter, Paul and Mary's Puff, the Magic Dragon (1963), follows the sequence I–iii–IV–V.
This schema offers a gentle, rolling alternative to the Doo-Wop progression. Instead of jumping from the tonic (I) down to the submediant (vi), the bass rises by a third to the mediant (iii). The iii chord is a fascinating harmonic creature; it shares two notes with the tonic, providing a smooth, almost imperceptible shift away from home before moving to the sturdy subdominant (IV).
The Puff Opening evokes a sense of wistful nostalgia and narrative unfolding. It serves as the harmonic bedrock for the verses of The Beach Boys' Fun, Fun, Fun (1964), David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust (1972), and Elton John's Crocodile Rock (1972).
2.5.6The Pachelbel Progression
Centuries before it was soundtracking high school graduations and weddings, Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D (c. 1680) laid down a harmonic sequence that would prove to be indestructible: I–V–vi–iii–IV–I–IV–V.3
The Pachelbel Progression is an elegant, cascading sequence that mixes major and minor chords to create a potent blend of joy and melancholy. The bassline typically steps down in a stately, sequential pattern, providing a regal foundation for whatever melody sits on top.
Pop music frequently adopts a simplified version of this sequence (I–V–vi–IV), which collapses it into the Four Chords of Pop. But the full, glorious extended progression can be heard in Green Day's Basket Case (1994), Vitamin C's "Graduation (Friends Forever)" (2000), and Maroon 5's Memories (2019), which explicitly lifts Pachelbel's melody as well.
2.5.7The Andalusian Cadence
Imagine walking through the cobbled streets of an ancient Andalusian town, the warm sun casting long shadows as the sound of a lone guitar weaves a melancholic melody into the air. This is the essence of the Andalusian Cadence, also known as the Lament Bass.

Typically expressed in a minor key as i–♭VII–♭VI–V (the exact Roman numerals depending on your starting point), this progression is defined by its descending stepwise bassline. It has deep roots in Renaissance and Baroque music, where a slowly descending bass line was a conventional device for expressing grief and lamentation - a convention codified in countless Baroque passacaglias and chaconnes.4 It is also a fundamental pillar of Spanish flamenco music.
The descending nature of the progression evokes longing, tragedy, or dramatic tension. In modern popular music it remains remarkably versatile: it supplies the soulful grit of Ray Charles’s Hit the Road Jack (1961), the driving tension of Eminem’s Lose Yourself (2002), and the flamenco-tinged groove of Dire Straits’ Sultans of Swing (1978).
The Andalusian Cadence is such a rich topic that we dedicate an entire chapter to its cultural history and advanced harmonic variations in Chapter 4.1 (Echoes of El Andalus). We will also see how it interacts with modal mixture in Chapter 3.4 (Modal Mixture).
2.5.8Ragtime Progressions
Before the jazz era fully took hold, ragtime music popularized its own set of harmonic schemata. The most prominent is the Ragtime Progression: I–VI7–II7–V7.

This sequence follows the circle of fifths and is structurally similar to the Standard Changes (I–vi–ii–V). However, the Ragtime Progression substitutes the diatonic minor chords (vi and ii) with their respective dominant seventh chord qualities (VI7 and II7). This chromatic alteration creates a harder, bouncier, and more propulsive sound as each dominant chord acts as an applied dominant leading to the next - a concept we explore fully in Chapter 3.1 (Secondary Dominants).5
This progression, popular in the early 1900s, can be heard in later pop contexts like Bruce Channel's Hey! Baby (1962), The Rooftop Singers' Walk Right In (1963), and Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant" (1967). An extended five-chord version (III7–VI7–II7–V7–I) was also widely used in the 1920s, driving hits like Charleston (1923) and Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue (1925).
2.5.9Chord Streams
Finally, we arrive at Chord Streams - a technique characterized by ascending or descending diatonic sequences, where chords move smoothly in stepwise motion up or down the scale.
Unlike functional progressions (where chords leap around the circle of fifths to create tension and resolution), chord streams rely on the sheer momentum of linear movement. They often break traditional voice-leading rules, giving them a distinct, planar sound associated with composers like Debussy.
Ascending streams (e.g., I–ii–iii–IV–V) create a sense of rising anticipation and triumphant climbing. You can hear this buoyant motion in The Beatles' Here, There and Everywhere (1966) or the introduction of Bob Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone (1965).
Descending streams (e.g., IV–iii–ii–I) provide a sense of gentle settling or graceful surrender, walking down the staircase back to the tonic home.
Chord streams are less about harmonic function and more about textural planing - moving a block of sound up or down the musical street. This stepwise motion is deeply connected to how melodies are constructed, a relationship we dissect in Chapter 2.2 (Melody and Phrasing).

Schema Scavenger Hunt: Listen to the Top 40 radio for one hour. Tally how many times you hear the Four Chords of Pop (I–V–vi–IV) versus the Doo-Wop Progression (I–vi–IV–V).
The Andalusian Shift: Take a simple melody you know well (like "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star") and try to harmonize it using the Andalusian Cadence. How does the emotional context change?
Pachelbel's Laboratory: Write a 16-bar composition using the full Pachelbel Progression. Experiment with using inverted chords to create a perfectly smooth, stepwise bassline.

- The Greek schēma (σχῆμα), from the verb ekhein (to have, to hold), means "form," "shape," or "figure" - encompassing the idea of something held or arranged in a particular way. The plural schemata is used by music theorists following classical Greek convention. The term entered music theory from rhetoric and logic, where a schema referred to a recognizable formal pattern.
- George Gershwin’s I Got Rhythm, with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, was written for Girl Crazy (1930). The standard jazz Rhythm Changes form is a 32-bar AABA framework derived from the song’s refrain; its A sections commonly use I–vi–ii–V7 turnarounds, while the bridge supplies a contrasting dominant cycle. Gershwin’s original refrain includes a two-bar extension often omitted in the jazz form.
- Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D major is conventionally dated to the 1680s, though its exact composition date is unknown; it was published posthumously. The work was largely unknown outside of specialist circles until its popularization in the late twentieth century - first through Jean-François Paillard's 1968 recording, which introduced it to mass audiences.
- The descending stepwise bass line as a vehicle for musical grief and lamentation is a well-documented convention in Baroque music. It appears in works as diverse as Henry Purcell's "Dido's Lament" (Dido and Aeneas, c. 1688), Johann Sebastian Bach's Crucifixus from the Mass in B minor, and Henry Purcell's Chacony in G minor.
